You need a server RIGHT NOW!
Are you considering getting a home server or Plex server? If you're not sure what you need it for, or if you think a server will cost too much, then you need to watch this video! We'll go over all the reasons why you might want a home server or even a small business server, including learning about virtualization, setting up your own network storage, and running a private DNS to block ads like with pi hole! Plus, we'll talk about how to repurpose an old desktop as a server, and introduce you to the Zima Board, a single board computer that can act as a server. The Zimaboard single board computer because it has a x86 processor you can install Windows if you don't know Linux yet. If you're new to all this or just getting started, we've got some bonus information for you too, but you'll have to stick around to the end to get it all.
There are lots of reasons to want a home server, like if you want to learn about virtualization, or you need your own network storage, or you want to run your own private DNS to block ads with something like Pi Hole. But if you're not sure you're ready for all that technical stuff, there are probably two types of servers that you'll be more interested in: streaming your own media with something like Plex, and managing all your smart devices at home with Home Assistant.
But don't worry, we'll help you find the server that fits your needs and budget best. And if you're just getting your feet wet, we've got some extra bonus information for you too. Just stick around until the end to get it all.
Now, earlier we mentioned acting as a server, and what we mean by that is using an older desktop that you no longer use and repurposing it as a server. It's not technically a server, since it won't have out-of-band management like IPMI, but you can add that with a PI KVM. We'll link to a video that shows you how to do that.
If sound and cooling are concerns for you, you might want to consider something smaller that's still a server, like the Zima Board. This single board computer is designed to be used as a server, and it's about the same size as a Raspberry Pi, but it uses an x86 Intel processor instead of ARM architecture, so you can run Windows on it if you're not comfortable with Linux yet.
Now, if you're planning on building a home lab with lots of VMs on a single server, you'll want to think about how you'll use it and if it needs to be running all the time, how fast the server needs to be, and how much you're willing to spend on a server. For example, if you're going to use it for a media platform like Plex, you might want to consider the Zima Board because it has built-in Intel graphics that will make transcoding the streams much more efficient with GPU cores than with CPU cores.
But if you're planning on using your server for something like virtualization or a home lab, you'll want to consider how much sound and cooling you'll need as well.
